Waste Not Want Not Wednesday - the 2 week Greece edition!

Got a great gluten free recipe, some frugal tips or a healthy living article? Well come join the party!

The Waste Not Want Not Wednesday link-up party is inspired by World Food Day (Oct. 16), and recent articles such as this one that show between 40-51% of food in Canada and America ends up in the garbage.  Over-consumption, lack of knowledge, low cost and over purchasing are common causes of food waste in North America.  This unsustainable over-consumption extends to so many aspects of our lives.

So perhaps if we all share our tips for consuming a little less stuff in general, cooking more responsibly and frugally, and living eco-friendly, we can each take a small part in making our world a little more sustainable.

And besides, who couldn't save a little bit of $$$ anyway?

Photoshoot for the Oral Allergy Syndrome Cookbook: Wheat / Gluten Free Asparagus & Asiago Flatbread

Tonight I'm in the process of packing and prepping to head to Greece on Wednesday for two weeks, so my dear hubby can do some research there (he's working on medieval landscape and environmental history).

But I thought I'd leave you a little something before I go: some photos from a recent photo shoot for my upcoming book, Recipes for Oral Allergy Syndrome a cookbook for fresh fruit and vegetable allergies. This wheat & gluten free asparagus flat bread is crazy tasty, and every time I make it I end up eating half a pan's worth in one sitting!

Dr. Bronner's Review

I'm thinking that from now on when people ask me what I want for Christmas or my birthday, I might just direct them to this review of some of Dr. Bronner's body care products. Consider this an early Christmas list!

In fact, when this box of Dr. Bronner's products arrived at my apartment it kinda was more exciting than Christmas, because at my house Christmas is often very practical: socks, fleece pajamas, a cheque, etc...

Right, enough talk of Christmas in June. On to the review!

8 Free and Easy DIY Summer Dress Tutorials

So summer is pretty much here for most people in North America, and I'm a few days away from leaving for my 2 week trip to Greece.

For months I've diligently gathered tutorials on my various Pinterest boards with the intentions of sewing myself a pretty summer dress to take with me.  I've marveled at how easy and quick these DIY summer dresses seemed to be. Well you know what Robbie Burns said: The best laid plans o'mice and men gang aft agley.

The upside of my lack of planning is that I've decided to share some of the prettiest, quickest, and easiest of the tutorials I've collected, so hopefully some of you can make use of them!

In the early stages of the book I had asked readers for input so that you all could get the most out of this book. That's what this post was originally about. It's been updated somewhat to reflect that the book is now available.

Below, you can check out some of the updates I made as the book was in the process of being researched and recipes were tested and photographed. You'll also find an outline of the first two chapters of the book, as well as links to photos of the recipes, as well as some other articles on OAS.

I thank you all for your comments here and elsewhere on the blog, as well as your emails. It's helped to guide this book and I hope you'll find it useful!

Why am I writing a book on Oral Allergy Syndrome?

Two reasons:  I myself had to struggle for many years, first to discover the cause of my numerous physical ailments and then to learn to manage it. I've spent years researching every article and published study I can find on it. Most people don't have the resources, time or ability to do this and by putting my findings into plain English I hope that this book will help others avoid some of the frustration and suffering I had to undergo.

Secondly, oral allergy syndrome is THE leading cause of food allergies and people need to be aware of that. I hope this book raises awareness and prompts more research on OAS to help determine a solution of sorts, or at least a greater understanding and awareness. I would like to assure people: "no, you are not crazy for thinking you are allergic to lettuce or apples or that almonds make your tongue feel, well, fuzzy, and you aren't just making it up to get attention!"

What will does the book contain?

The topics have been determined by my own curiosity about OAS, as well as the many, many questions and comments I've received on my Oral Allergy Syndrome page.  If you'd like to know more, or want to see something I haven't listed here, please let me know in the comments section below!

The simple outline for the first two chapters (approx 40 pages of info!) is as such:
